Phils to keep J-Rollin' along

Posted by Anonymous
Jimmy Rollins has re-signed with the Phillies, the only team he's ever been with, for another 3 years at a cost of $33 million. There is a vesting option for a 4th year, also at $11 million.

The 2007 NL MVP is a 3-time Gold Glove recipient (2007-09) and 3-time All-Star, though not since 2005. Last year, at age 32, Rollins hit .268/.338/.399, with 16 HRs and 30 SB in 142 games. His 102 OPS+ reversed a 2-year slide.

His performance was worth 3.7 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) by the Baseball-Reference method, tied with Asdrubal Cabrera for #7 among MLB shortstops.

The new contract represents a solid raise for Rollins, which may seem imprudent, since any player's production will likely decline during age 33-35. But there may be a "good will" aspect to the deal: Over the past 5 years, Rollins earned a total of $42.5 while producing 16.7 WAR, a relative bargain rate of about $2.5 million per WAR. And Rollins has been a leader, on and off the field, for a team that has made 5 straight trips to the playoffs. He is as much the face of the franchise as anyone else.

Nevertheless, one can't help wondering what a shortstop might produce at age 33-35. The following table shows the WAR values of all shortstops in MLB history who qualified for the batting title at age 32, followed by their age 33, 34 and 35 seasons, and a 33-35 total WAR:
