The 2007 NL MVP is a 3-time Gold Glove recipient (2007-09) and 3-time All-Star, though not since 2005. Last year, at age 32, Rollins hit .268/.338/.399, with 16 HRs and 30 SB in 142 games. His 102 OPS+ reversed a 2-year slide.
His performance was worth 3.7 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) by the Baseball-Reference method, tied with Asdrubal Cabrera for #7 among MLB shortstops.
The new contract represents a solid raise for Rollins, which may seem imprudent, since any player's production will likely decline during age 33-35. But there may be a "good will" aspect to the deal: Over the past 5 years, Rollins earned a total of $42.5 while producing 16.7 WAR, a relative bargain rate of about $2.5 million per WAR. And Rollins has been a leader, on and off the field, for a team that has made 5 straight trips to the playoffs. He is as much the face of the franchise as anyone else.
